Queen Boudicca of the Iceni has always been a beloved historical personality in Britain.

She was the wife of King Prasutagus, who ruled the kingdom of the Iceni as an independent ruler from the Romans. On his last will, he left the kingdom to his daughters and the Roman Emperor. That last will was betrayed by the Romans who wanted to annex the Iceni territory on Eastern England.

On AD 61, while the Roman Governor Suetonius was away on campaign, Boudicca led a force of around 100.000 Icenis, Trinovantes and other tribes to Camulodunum (todays Colchester). They destroyed the Roman presence there and got ready for the next target, a small new commercial outpost called Londinium (todays London). The Romans didn’t have enough forces to defend it and abandoned the outpost, which was also destroyed by Boudicca.

Meanwhile, Suetonius regrouped his forces and managed to defeat the Iceni at the Battle of Watling Street and his victory confirmed the presence of the Romans in Britain. The fate of Queen Boudicca is uncertain, as it is unknown if she killed herself to avoid capture or died of illness.

We are really happy to be able to re-release this amazing former sculpt of Origen Art as part of Women by Pepa Saavedra series. This proud and powerful Celtic ruler earned her rightful place in history.
