When the priests finished applying the sacred paint on the face of the last of the young men, the ritual was ready to start. Every year, the nearby villages sent the best of their youth to the forbidden temple in the forest. Their motivation was a mix of devotion and fear, as sending a handful of young people there seemed a small price to pay to avoid the wrath of the ancient horned god.
Yrian was brave, but he was concerned, as he knew that some of them would not pass the ritual. Those not worthy would become just meat for the god, hunted to death in the entangled passages of the temple’s catacombs, that not even the priests dared to enter.
Most of those that have entered the threshold of the temple had disappeared in its shadows without a noise. That was good, that meant that now they had started a new life as acolytes at the service of the god. But sometimes, mostly when a nervous candidate entered the darkness beyond the gate, you could hear horrible screams of impending doom just moments later. During those brief instants of wait that could lead to either silence or screams, even the most veteran priests looked anxious and tense.
Life as an acolyte was not a good existence. You could only expect privations and hard punishments in exchange for unquestionable loyalty in the service to the god, but all that was better than just serving as his nourishment and entertainment upon your arrival.
It was his turn. He looked at the ominous gate covered in dense foliage. Unnatural darkness awaited him at the other side. He closed his eyes and clenched his fists, trying not to think too much as he crossed the entrance. Silence.
He waited a bit more and nothing happened. It seemed that the god has accepted his service, now he was an acolyte.
