“All men hate the wretched; how, then, must I be hated, who am miserable beyond all living things! Yet you, my creator, detest and spurn me, thy creature, to whom thou art bound by ties only dissoluble by the annihilation of one of us”.

The novel “Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus” is the most famous work of the English writer Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. It was published in London in 1818.

The foundations for this work can be found in the experiences and conversations she had during a stay near Leman lake, near Geneva, with her husband Percy Shelley, John Polidori, and Lord Byron. They decided to run a competition to see who could write the best horror story. While working on the bet, Mary dreamed one night about a scientist who had created life but was horrified about his creation. That dream was the initial inspiration for the novel.

The immortal story of Victor Frankenstein’s creature includes elements of the Gothic novel and the Romantic movement along with influences from previous works of literature, like “Paradise Lost” by Milton or “The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner” by Coleridge. It has served as an inspiration for countless literary works, plays, films, and other sorts of art creations.

For our bust, we have tried to portray the most interesting character of the novel, the creature itself. This character offers many different angles and interpretations and we have tried to show our own point of view; a miserable and lonely creature that is no evil by itself. He is mostly innocent and the circumstances determine in a tragic way his development. He would have wanted to be loved but he is such an abomination that such a thing is impossible.
