“Ph’nglui mglw’nafh Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn.
In his house at R’lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming.”
Howard Phillips Lovecraft was an American novelist from the early XX century whose horror fiction works gave him worldwide posthumous fame.
He was born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1890, in an English ancestry family that could trace their lineage to the early colonists of North America. He was raised by his mother and had poor health since a kid. That condition, along with a declining financial situation of the family and a stultifying upbringing developed in him a reclusive and insecure character.
He started writing as an amateur for pulp magazines, devoting himself to the fantastic genre. His most acclaimed achievement was the creation of a particular cosmology denominated The Cthulhu Mythos, developed in collaboration with other writers that belonged to his circle of correspondents, including worldwide famous names like August Derleth, Robert Bloch, and Robert E. Howard. The main theme of this cosmology is the concept of cosmic horror, where human beings are nothing but mere spectators or puppets of incredibly ancient, interdimensional, and powerful-natured forces at play, that fight an eternal titanic battle.
While he never was acknowledged as a talented writer during his life, stories like The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, The Dunwich Horror, At the Mountains of Madness, or The Call of Cthulhu have earned him a place as one of the most influential writers of the Fantastic genre of the XX century.
For our bust, we have decided to portray him holding one of the most famous fictional books ever, the ominous Necronomicon, full of horrible truths and forbidden arcane knowledge, capable of driving insane anyone who reads it. Lurking behind the writer, the tentacles of some obscene and impossible creature that might have waited for uncountable eons before making its presence noticed through some ancient and blaspheme ritual.
