“Today is quiet”, said Cecil while chewing a sizable bite of the apple in his hand. The words were barely distinguishable among the crunching sounds of his open mouth, but that was pretty much the same phrase he said every single day at that time of the day. The market was not yet open, so the traffic crossing into the city was scarce.
“Well, it is still early”, said Knut while yawning. Being the Gate Master was a privilege, but also meant he had to wake up earlier than anybody else to open the big access doors.
At that time, the only people around the gates were beggars minding their business and the occasional traveller arriving from far away. It was quiet indeed, besides the barking of a distant dog and the lovely sound of potties being emptied over the windows.
“Look at that…”, whispered Cecil, pointing towards the winding entry road that followed the walls towards the gates, “what a fancy boy!”
A young nobleman on horseback was coming to the gates. Dressed in the most elegant and pristine clothes, his pearly waving cape was easy to spot from a distance. His appearance, combined with his beautiful white stallion, made him look like an ivory tower, tall and proud among a sea of dirt and mud. And, judging from the expression on his face, he was aware of the impact that his presence inspired in the scum around him.
“He must be here for an audience with the Burgermeister. I don’t think he would waste a minute with anyone lower than that”, said Knut. Cecil shrugged and took another bite of the apple. “Mate, I hate sooo much these arrogant pricks”, he said with a sigh. “I bet he won’t even look at us when he crosses the gate…”
Suddenly, a revolting splash sound muted everything and everyone around. The nobleman, now perfectly still, with his mouth wide open in surprise, was completely covered in warm pee and poo. His wet, ruined clothes were tightly adhered to his body, and a large chunk of shit was slowly sliding down from his shoulder in a hypnotic motion.
The nervous steed shook his head to remove the filth from his mane, which sent tiny splashes of crap directly to the face and open mouth of the youngster. A scream was heard across the city, waking up the neighbourhood a bit earlier than usual.
Knut and Cecil were just fascinated. The youngster, shaking and on the verge of tears, came up to them and said: “Please, can you help me?” The watchmen looked at each other, with the same thought in mind. It was going to be an interesting morning after all.
