The reign of the charismatic King Henry VIII of England is undoubtedly one of English history’s most controversial and decisive periods.
Besides embarking on extensive political reforms, mostly aimed at expanding the royal powers in opposition to papal authority, he is best remembered for starting the English Reformation, which separated the Church of England from the Catholic Church of Rome due to a disagreement with Pope Clement VII over the annulment of his marriage with his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, daughter of the Catholic Monarchs of Spain.
Historical accounts describe him as a vital personality, an extravagant expender, and a relentless adversary for anybody who dared to oppose him.
For our bust, we had inspiration from the many surviving portrayals of this monarch, in particular those by Hans Holbein the Younger.
