The Varangian Vikings migrated from Scandinavia, in particular from Sweden, to the southeastern European mainland. They settled in a wide area comprised of today’s Belarus, Western Russia, and Ukraine. In this later and more southern area, they founded the medieval state of Kyiv.

They traveled along the Dnieper and the Volga towards the Black Sea, working as traders, mercenaries, and pirates, and it was just a matter of time before they clashed with the Byzantine Empire in the South, in what is known as the Rus-Byzantine Wars.

During this long period of conflict, which spanned until the early XII century, many Varangians ended up serving as mercenaries in the elite guard of the Byzantine emperor and converted to Orthodox Christianity. This eventually would lead to the Christianization of the Kyivan Rus.

Note: This is a resin miniature kit that requires assembly and painting.
